About Collings Lakes, New Jersey

Collings Lakes is a community of 1,501 people in Buena Vista Township, Atlantic County, and it takes its name from its lakes. The land here was once bogs, and they were flooded to create a chain of lakes. The lakes received names over time, and years later the whole area came to be called Collings Lakes.

  • Lakes with namesThe earliest lakes in the chain were named for Charlotte Cushman and Elwood Braddock, and Cushman Avenue still carries the first of those names. Lake Jay, Lake Robin, Lake George and Lake Albert were named after them.
  • Neighbors pay for the waterHomes in Collings Lakes come with certain deed restrictions, and owners pay a yearly tiered fee for the "maintenance of lakes, dams and beaches." Whether they also had to join the Collings Lakes Civic Association went to court, and on September 15, 2006, the New Jersey Superior Court ruled that membership is voluntary.
  • Water covers 8.88 percentThe community spreads over 0.701 square miles, and 0.062 square miles of that is water, nearly all of it in the lakes that were made from the old bogs.
