About Colorado City, Arizona

Colorado City is a town of 2,478 people in Mohave County, in the Arizona Strip, right on the Utah line across from Hildale. Members of the Council of Friends, who had broken away from the Salt Lake City church of the Latter-day Saints, founded the settlement in 1913 and called it Short Creek. They picked a remote spot so they could go on practicing plural marriage, a practice the LDS Church had publicly dropped in 1890.

Arizona's governor, John Howard Pyle, sent troops into Short Creek on July 26, 1953, to stop polygamy. The court fight that followed lasted two years and hurt Pyle's political career, and for about 50 years afterward Arizona mostly left the town alone. After Joseph W. Musser died, the community split, and the FLDS renamed its two halves Colorado City and Hildale to break any link to the raids. The town incorporated in September 1985, when residents wanted their own local government and basic services.

  • First school in 1914A year after Short Creek was founded, its first school went up on the Arizona side of the line, built with Mohave County money, and a post office came after it. The town still has one public school, El Capitan School, once called the Colorado City K-12 Public School, and the post office serves both towns as Colorado City, AZ/Hildale, UT.
  • A town owned by a trustFor years most of the land in Colorado City belonged to the United Effort Plan, a trust the FLDS church used to hold its real estate. In 2007 state authorities began breaking up the church's ownership of the town's land, and the church's followers drew further apart from the outside world in response.
  • A $5.2 million verdictRonald and Jinjer Cooke settled near Short Creek in 2008, yet Colorado City and Hildale refused to hook them up to utilities. On March 20, 2014, a jury found that the two towns had discriminated against the Cookes because they did not belong to the FLDS Church, and it awarded the family $5.2 million.
  • A college campus in townMohave County voters created Mohave Community College in October 1970. The college first served Kingman, Bullhead City and Lake Havasu City, each with a campus of its own, and later it opened its North Mohave Campus in Colorado City, one of the ways town leaders have tried to welcome outsiders.
