About Columbia Heights, Minnesota

Columbia Heights is a city of 21,973 people in Anoka County, on the northern edge of Minneapolis. Thomas Lowry of Minneapolis platted the village at the south end of Fridley Township and gave it its name. On March 14, 1898, Columbia Heights split off from Fridley Township as a village of 1,696 acres, with 100 residents and 20 houses. Milton C. Ailes was the first council president, and C.H. Wadsworth kept the village records.

As people moved in, the old footpaths became roads. Residents adopted a city charter on July 21, 1921, and Columbia Heights became a city. Prestemon, Gauvitte and McKenna Parks carry the names of men from that first city council. Ava Ostrander, who in 1924 became the first woman elected to the council, has a park named for her too.

  • Lincoln's funeral carThomas Lowry bought Abraham Lincoln's funeral car, restored it and showed it at exhibitions across the country. Between shows the car was kept in Columbia Heights, and it burned there on March 18, 1911.
  • A sister city in PolandIn 1944, during the Warsaw uprising, a plane carrying Allied flyers was shot down near Łomianki, Poland. One of the men on that mission had a brother who lived in Columbia Heights for many years. Łomianki built a monument to the American flyers in 1987, and in 1991 Columbia Heights chose it as its sister city. A Polish flag and white eagle on the city sign along Central Avenue honor the town's early Polish American roots.
  • All-American City in 2016The National Civic League gave Columbia Heights its All-American City Award in 2016. In 2023 the city added a second sister city, Galdogob, Somalia, to honor its growing Somali American community.
