About Columbia, Maine
Columbia was first known as Township 12. It joined with Township 13 and was incorporated as Columbia in 1796. The two stayed together for 67 years, until Columbia Falls became its own town in 1863. Moses Worcester built the first sawmill, which later burned and gave Burnt Mill Rips its name.
Early settlers came to the Pleasant River valley for marsh hay and lumber. They built boxes and dikes in the marshes to cut the salt in the hay. These were called aboiteaux, and that area is now known as the abadors.
