About Columbia, New Jersey

For a long time Columbia was called Kirkbride's. Joseph Kirkbride had taken up a large tract of land here, though he never settled. It was also called Dill's Ferry, for an old ferry there. Its wooden bridge to Portland, Pennsylvania, went up in 1869. It was the only bridge of its kind to survive the great flood of 1906.

Early Dutch settlers, led by mining prospectors coming down the Delaware valley, built the first mill dam here. The water power of the Paulins Kill fed the town for more than 200 years. Later a larger dam supplied hydroelectric power.
