About Columbia, Virginia

Columbia rose on the site of Rassawek, the capital of the Monacans. The place was called Point of Fork until 1788. That year an act of the general assembly made it a town named Columbia. It later became important as the meeting place of two canals.

During the Revolutionary War, a Patriot arsenal led by von Steuben stood near Point of Fork. Loyalist troops under Colonel John Graves Simcoe captured it on June 5, 1781. Steuben had already moved its stores across the James and dumped heavy cannon in the river. The arsenal was rebuilt and served until 1801.

  • River trade town on the JamesAfter the Revolution, Columbia became a shipping point for Virginia's tobacco trade. The town ran its own bateau freight line. Its river junction linked Richmond with Lynchburg and Charlottesville. In the mid-1800s it was also a stagecoach stop between Richmond and Staunton.
