About Commerce, Georgia
Commerce is a Jackson County city in northeastern Georgia, about 70 miles northeast of Atlanta. Creek and Cherokee people inhabited the surrounding area before European settlement, and a permanent white settlement began nearby in 1784. Known for much of the nineteenth century as Harmony Grove, the community took the name Commerce in 1904, reflecting its role in the regional cotton trade.
- Population in 2020The 2020 census recorded 7,387 residents in Commerce.
- Railroad Shaped GrowthThe North Eastern Railroad's Athens-to-Lula line reached Harmony Grove in 1876, and the town expanded in both directions along the tracks.
- Early Female AcademyGeorgia's legislature chartered the Harmony Grove Female Academy in 1824 as the state's first chartered all-female school.
