About Como, Illinois
A colony organized in Tazewell County bought the land from Peter Menard and Judge Bigelow of Peoria. In July 1838 it platted a village there. The village took its name from Lake Como in Italy. The wide stretch of Rock River just above town was said to resemble that lake.
Como was platted in 1838 on the original claim of Jason Hopkins. Settlers bid for its 142 lots. Each buyer had to build a house or lose the money paid.
- A family tie to Jane AddamsColonel George Weber promoted the Como mill. He was the grandfather of Jane Addams, who founded Hull House in Chicago.
