This vintage postcard captures the Continental Motel along the open road in Cumberland, Maryland, the kind of roadside lodging that welcomed mid-century travelers passing through. Nestled in Allegany County in the mountains of western Maryland, Cumberland earned the nickname "The Queen City" and once served as a key gateway to the West, where the historic National Road , the first major federally funded highway in the United States , began its journey across the Appalachians.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1950s, "linen" postcards flourished as an American art form, named for the textured, fabric-like paper that gave their bright colors a soft, painterly glow. This edition comes from the work of Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose images are preserved today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. It has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL to bring back its original warmth and charm.
