About Copalis Beach, Washington

Copalis Beach is a community of 447 people in Grays Harbor County, on the Pacific coast where the Copalis River meets the ocean. Long before any town stood here, the Copalis people lived along the river and on the stretch of shore that runs from Joe Creek's mouth to Grays Harbor. They belonged to the coastal branch of the Salishan language family, and in 1805 Lewis and Clark estimated that 200 of them lived in 10 houses.

Settlers who were not Native arrived around the 1890s. The beach in front of their new town lay near the northern end of what may be the largest razor clam bed in the world, and the clams soon made Copalis known well beyond the coast.

“Home of the razor clam.”
Wikipedia
  • Named for the rock offshoreThe name Copalis comes from a Native word meaning opposite the rock, after a large rock in the ocean just north of the river's mouth. It was also the name of the local Native band. Lewis and Clark wrote the tribe's name as Pailsh, and today both the Chehalis people and the Quinault Indian Nation count the Copalis as part of their tribe.
  • A million pounds of clamsCommercial diggers working Copalis Beach in 1947 and 1948 pulled over a million pounds of razor clams and earned about $200,000, while the canneries and their workers made far more. Tourists dug thousands of pounds on top of that. Each commercial season, the town's usual population of about 350 grew fourfold.
  • From cranberries to a resortFor a time, Copalis stood at the heart of the Pacific coast's cranberry growing. Later it turned into a resort community, and it became the trading center for the farms and settlements around it.
