About Copper Harbor, Michigan
The village was once the chief port of entry to the Copper Country. Lumps of pure copper along the bay drew early explorers, and over a dozen mines opened above the village. The deposits proved thin, the mines closed, and railroads took its trade. Tourists later rediscovered it, saving Michigan's northernmost village from becoming a ghost settlement.
The Lake Superior district's first actual mining took place near Copper Harbor in 1844. Workers took a few tons of black oxide ore from a fissure vein. That vein was soon abandoned, but the same company later struck native copper. It began paying dividends in 1849.
