About Cordova, New Mexico

Cordova is a village of 380 people in Rio Arriba County, a short way off New Mexico State Road 76, the High Road to Taos, between Chimayo and Truchas. Its first name was Pueblo Quemado, taken from a burned-out Indian pueblo nearby. Indian attacks drove the early settlers out, and the village was settled again for good in 1750.

Pueblo Quemado kept its old name for a century and a half. A post office opened here on March 26, 1900, and that same year the village was renamed Cordova for a prominent local family, the family of Matías Córdova, one of Pueblo Quemado's residents. The surname traces back to the Spanish city of Córdoba.

  • San Antonio de Padua ChapelThe village chapel, San Antonio de Padua del Quemado, still carries the town's first name. The state's historic marker for Cordova singles it out as a standout example of Northern New Mexico art and architecture, and the chapel is listed on the National Register.
  • A village of wood carversCordova is well known for its wood carvers, whose work has carried the village's name far beyond its streets.
  • Street in Cordova, 1946The Oregon-born printmaker Norma Bassett Hall made a serigraph called "Street in Cordova, New Mexico" in 1946 and 1947. It looks up a narrow street of adobe houses, past three adults, a child and the back and steeple of the church, toward the Pecos mountains, all in soft beige and white light.
