About Cornland, Illinois

Cornland is a small community in Logan County, set on the gently rolling ground drained by the Sangamon River, close to the bottomlands of Lake Fork Creek. Joshua Day laid out the town in 1871, right after the Gilman, Clinton & Springfield Railroad was finished through the area. That line later became the Springfield branch of the Illinois Central, and the town grew up beside its tracks.

  • A post office since 1872Mail began arriving at a Cornland post office in 1872, a year after Day platted the town, and an office under the Cornland name has stayed open ever since.
  • A church moved into townSeveral years before Cornland existed, a Christian society organized four miles to the north and put up a small church. Once the new town was platted, its members joined the Cornland congregation, and they brought their church building with them into town.
  • 89 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 89 people in Cornland, a census-designated place covering 0.10 square miles. Mount Pulaski Community Unit School District 23 runs the schools its children attend.
