About Costilla, New Mexico

Costilla is a community of 177 people in Taos County, New Mexico, where State Roads 196 and 522 meet. The village first went by San Miguel, after its church. On November 1, 1861, the new Territory of Colorado laid out its first 17 counties, and San Miguel became the first seat of one of them, Costilla County, Colorado Territory.

  • Renamed Costilla in 1862When the village post office opened on November 13, 1862, the people chose the name Costilla, perhaps to mark their place as the county seat. They held that role only briefly: in 1863 the county's voters moved the seat 17 miles north to San Luis.
  • In New Mexico after allA U.S. government survey in 1869 found that Costilla lay in Taos County, New Mexico Territory, rather than in Colorado. The paperwork took a few more years to catch up, and the post office did not officially become Costilla, New Mexico Territory, until October 21, 1872.
  • 80,000 acres held togetherLocal families worked for decades to hold on to their rights to the land and its use. In 1902 they founded the Defensive Association of Land Settlers, and in 1942 the Rio Costilla Cooperative Livestock Association was incorporated. Its member-owners still care for 80,000 acres of farmland, range and forest that support Costilla and nearby Amalia.
