About Covington, Tennessee

Covington is a city of 8,663 people and the seat of Tipton County, in West Tennessee about 12 miles east of the Mississippi River. It was chosen as the county seat in 1826 for its spot near the middle of the county, and by 1833 the Tennessee Gazetteer called it a post town and the seat of justice, lying thirty-eight miles from Memphis.

In 1852 there was an effort to move the county seat to Randolph, but Covington kept it. Randolph never won a railroad, while the Memphis and Paducah Railroad finished its tracks to Covington in July 1873. Between 1873 and 1880 more than 6,000 newcomers arrived to work and trade in the town the railroad had opened up.

  • Electric power in 1894After the railroad came, the modern services followed one by one. A telegraph line reached Covington from Memphis in 1882, electric power was installed in 1894, and in 1898 the city built its own water system so residents could drink clean water. Workers paved the streets in 1922, and since 1929 a gas company has heated the town's homes and businesses in winter.
  • Cotton and the Civil WarThe fertile floodplains and long, hot summers around Covington made it cotton country in the nineteenth century. Planters who moved here brought enslaved African Americans with them or bought them in the domestic slave trade, and West Tennessee became the center of slavery in the state. In the Civil War, Union forces fought for control of the Mississippi and occupied Tennessee from 1862, so the war ended early here.
  • Birthplace of Isaac HayesThe composer and musician Isaac Hayes was born in Covington. He was later inducted into the Hall of Fame, and a new generation knew his voice as Chef on the cartoon South Park.
  • Mastodon bones at the museumThe Tipton County Museum in Covington shows artifacts from the county's past and runs a nature center about West Tennessee's wildlife, with mounted local animals and fragments of mastodon bone. Beside it lies a 20-acre park with a half-mile trail through woods and a man-made wetland, and a Veterans Memorial out front honors county soldiers who died in war. Admission is free.
