About Croswell, Michigan

Croswell is a city of 2,322 people in Sanilac County, in the Thumb of Michigan. It began about 1845, when a sawmill went up on the banks of the Black River, and the settlement first took the river's name. It was later called Davisville after its first postmaster, and in 1877 it was renamed to honor Charles Croswell, the governor of Michigan.

Two years after the new name, the railroad arrived. The first section of the line, from Port Huron to Croswell, opened on May 12, 1879. In 1881 Croswell incorporated as a city, which made it politically separate from Lexington Township.

  • The Swinging BridgeCroswell's best-known landmark is a cable and wood plank suspension footbridge over the Black River, officially named the "Be Good to Your Mother-In-Law" bridge. Locals call it the Swinging Bridge, and the annual Swinging Bridge Festival is held there.
  • A summer fair since 1884The Croswell Agricultural Society Fair started in 1884 and is among the oldest fairs in Michigan. Farms around the city raise corn, wheat, oats, soybeans, sugar beets, peas and alfalfa, and the fair returns each summer to the Croswell Fairgrounds at Harrington and Croswell Roads.
  • A rare four-way signalAt the corner of Howard Street and Sanborn Avenue, Croswell still runs a fixed four-way traffic signal. It is one of only two of its kind still working in Michigan.
