About Crystal, Minnesota

Crystal is a city of 23,330 people in Hennepin County, about 5 miles from downtown Minneapolis. It began as a township called Crystal Lake, organized on April 3, 1860, and it took that name from the smaller of its lakes. The Twin lakes lay within its borders too, but an old account praised Crystal lake for its deep water and even better shores.

The lake also named Crystal prairie, an open stretch four miles long and a mile wide. When settlers first saw it, small groves stood scattered across the grass like islands. The community was incorporated as Crystal village on January 11, 1887, though one writer judged that it worked more like a small township.

  • A flour mill in 1859In 1859, a year before the township was formally organized, David Morgan put up the first mill for grinding flour at Crystal Lake.
  • An airport inside the cityCrystal Airport, a small field for general aviation, sits within the city limits.
  • 26 parksCrystal maintains 26 parks spread over more than 240 acres, with ball fields, courts, playgrounds and trails. The Crystal Community Center has a skate park, a Little League Baseball complex and an outdoor aquatic center.
  • Born in CrystalCrystal is the birthplace of Tom Dooher, who once led Education Minnesota, and of Jeff Schuh, who went on to play in the NFL. The city is also linked to two men from hockey: Todd Richards, who coached the Columbus Blue Jackets, and Travis Richards, who played in the NHL.
