About the Village of Custer, Mason County, Michigan

Custer is a village of 272 people in central Mason County, Michigan. It was founded in 1876 and grew as a stop on the Pere Marquette Railroad's main line, which linked Saginaw with Ludington on Lake Michigan. A store and a boarding house went up first, and in the fall of 1878 the land was platted as the village of Custer. The settlement kept growing around its depot, and in 1895 Custer became an incorporated village.

  • Platted in the fall of 1878The History of Mason County, published in 1882, tells how Custer's founder first built a store and a boarding house. Soon after, in the fall of 1878, he laid out the village plat. The railroad stop and those first buildings became the center of the new town.
  • Orchard countryMason County's early history praised its fruit, and it placed some of the county's finest orchards near Scottville and Custer, in the middle of the county. Apples, currants, strawberries, raspberries and cherries all did well there, but the long, steady yield of the peach orchards gave the county its name for fruit. Crawfords and Peachblows were singled out as especially large and plentiful.
  • 277 people in 1910The 1910 census counted 277 people in Custer village and 1,287 in Custer Township, which included the village. By then a Ludington bank had opened a branch in Custer, as it also did in Fountain, so farmers and merchants could do their banking close to home.
