About Cutler, California

Cutler is a community of 4,480 people in Tulare County, close to the foot of the Sierra Nevada. It grew up around a railroad depot, where the San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railroad kept a station agent and handled both passengers and freight. On the railroad's Visalia District, the stop's location was mile post 38.50, and in 1899 the line became part of the Santa Fe.

  • Named for a county judgeJohn Cutler, one of the district's early settlers, served on the county bench as a judge for a long stretch of years. When the railroad wanted to cross his land in 1898, he agreed on one condition: the station had to bear his name. The Santa Fe kept the bargain and named the station Cutler in 1903.
  • A rail junction from 1914In 1914 the Minkler Southern, a Santa Fe subsidiary, built a second line one mile east of town and joined the two tracks with a wye. That made Cutler a junction, and it stayed an important one through the 1970s.
  • The tracks came up after 1992Freight traffic slowly fell off, and in 1992 the Santa Fe sold its lines here to the Tulare Valley Railroad. The new owner soon gave up the tracks, and they were taken out, closing nearly a century of railroading in Cutler.
