About Cuyama, California

Cuyama is a community of 37 people in Santa Barbara County. It sits in the Cuyama Valley near the Carrizo Plain, and the Cuyama River runs past it on the way west to the Pacific. The town's name goes back to Kuyam, a Chumash village, and the Chumash word means clam or freshwater mollusk. The Yokuts and the Chumash lived on this land before anyone else.

In 1843 Jose Maria Rojo received Rancho Cuyama, a grant of 22,200 acres. A century later, in 1943, the Richfield Oil Company began exploring the valley for oil, and the Norris Oil Company arrived five years after that. The oil work brought new people and soon a new town next door.

  • New Cuyama, built in 1952Atlantic Richfield laid out New Cuyama in 1952, four miles west of the old town, as housing for its oil workers. A 1960 county planning study praised the company town's layout and found that the original Cuyama, once the center of community life in the valley, had only a few old buildings left from those years.
  • Oil in the Sierra Madre foothillsThe Sierra Madre range rises south of town, and much of it lies in Los Padres National Forest. Its foothills hold the South Cuyama Oil Field, where a great deal of oil and gas has been pumped. In July 2005 the Forest Service opened 52,000 acres of the forest, mostly just south of Cuyama, to more development.
  • Apricots, peaches and plumsOrchards of apricots, peaches and plums surround the town. Cuyama has hot, dry summers, and its warmest month averages 75 °F, a climate classed as hot-summer Mediterranean.
