About Dahlgren, Virginia

Dahlgren is a community of 2,946 people in King George County, beside the tidal Upper Machodoc Creek near the Potomac River. The Navy bought 1,300 acres along the creek for a new proving ground, and on October 16, 1918, crews test-fired a gun mounted on a tractor there for the first time. The base has shaped the town ever since.

When the proving ground opened, the local post office was called Dido. The Bureau of Ordnance wanted to rename it Machodoc Creek, but another post office already used that name, so the Navy set aside its habit of naming places for geography and chose a person instead. In 1919 the Postal Service changed Dido to Dahlgren, after Rear Admiral John Adolphus Dahlgren, known as the father of naval ordnance.

  • A base with many namesThe base began as the U.S. Naval Proving Ground. After 1950 it became the U.S. Naval Weapons Laboratory, then the Naval Surface Weapons Center in 1974 and the Naval Surface Warfare Center in 1987, adding Dahlgren Division to that name around 1990. In 2006 it became Naval Support Activity-South Potomac, and the warfare center stayed on as one of its tenant commands.
  • Watching space until 2004The U.S. Naval Space Surveillance Systems command worked from the Dahlgren base until 2004, when the Air Force took over that job. The AEGIS Training and Readiness Center is another command based there today.
  • Dahlgren Heritage MuseumThe town's museum tells the story of the Navy at Dahlgren and the community around it. Its holdings include a small replica of the Dahlgren gun used in the Civil War years, a Norden bombsight and the propeller from the first radio-controlled flight with no one aboard.
  • The 1.7-mile Nice BridgeThe Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge carries U.S. Route 301 across the wide Potomac at Dahlgren, toward La Plata, Maryland, 18 miles away. Drivers use it to skip Interstate 95, and small businesses keep opening along the highway.
