About Daleville, Virginia
Daleville is a community of 3,070 people in southern Botetourt County, along U.S. Route 220 in the Roanoke metropolitan area. Within it lies Amsterdam, a village laid out in 1796 that was once the heart of a Dunkard community. Amsterdam grew into a stage stop for travelers bound for Old Sweet Springs, a popular resort that is now in West Virginia, and its Keeling factory turned out split-bottom chairs that collectors later came to prize.
In 1890 there was no high school anywhere in Botetourt County. B. F. Nininger wanted his own children and those of G. G. Layman taught, and at his request Professor I. N. H. Beahm opened a select school for them. Classes began that September in a small one-story building across the road from the later college grounds. Sixty-eight students enrolled in the first year, and the school went by Botetourt Normal School until 1896 before it grew into Daleville College.
- Greenfield since the early 1990sWork on the Botetourt Center at Greenfield, a big business park in the north end of Daleville, started in the early 1990s. By 2022 five companies had operations there or planned them, with about 1,500 workers, and roughly 450 acres were still open for building. In 2020 several county government offices moved to Greenfield from Fincastle, and the Board of Supervisors now meets there.
- A brewery from San DiegoBallast Point, a San Diego brewery, opened its East Coast plant and Tap Room at Greenfield in June 2017. Brewing started that September, and the first keg of Grapefruit Sculpin went to Governor Terry McAuliffe's office in Richmond. Constellation Brands shut the taproom and restaurant in September 2019, cutting 41 jobs, and New Belgium Brewing Company bought the brewery in March 2023.
