About Dardanelle, Arkansas

Dardanelle is a city of 4,517 people on the Arkansas River in Yell County, and it shares the job of county seat with Danville. David Brearley and his brothers, Charles and Pearson, opened the town's first store. His son, Joseph H. Brearley, laid out the streets in 1847 and gave land for Brearley Cemetery, south of town, in 1851. Dardanelle was incorporated on January 17, 1855.

The river made Dardanelle one of the leading towns in Arkansas during the 19th century, a trading place for cotton, gin and rum about halfway between Little Rock and Fort Smith. By the early 1880s it shipped a great deal of cotton, but the main railroad ran through Russellville on the north bank. Local merchants backed the Dardanelle & Russellville Railroad to reach that line, and their freight crossed the river by ferry until a bridge took its place.

  • The Council Oaks, 1823On June 24, 1823, Robert Crittenden, then acting governor of Arkansas Territory, met Cherokee leaders including John Jolly and Black Fox near the Council Oaks. They disputed reservation lines and Cherokee settlement south of the river, but they signed no treaty and settled nothing. One of the two oaks, 102 feet tall, was lost to a flood in the early 1990s; the other still stands in a city park.
  • A floating bridge in 1890In October 1890 a pontoon bridge opened across the river to Russellville, replacing the ferry. At 2,208 feet it was the longest in the world at the time. Walkers paid five cents for a round trip and a loaded wagon paid twenty-five cents. Several times in its nearly 40 years, floods swept the whole bridge away.
  • A regiment raised here in 1861In August 1861 Colonel Sam W. Williams left the state Military Board to raise a regiment that would gather at Dardanelle. George W. Lemoyne brought in four companies, and the regiment was organized with nine as the Seventeenth Arkansas Infantry. Williams stepped aside so Lemoyne could be its colonel and served as lieutenant colonel.
  • A newspaper since 1853The Dardanelle Post-Dispatch was founded in 1853, two years before the town was incorporated, and it calls itself the oldest weekly newspaper in Arkansas.
