About Dayton, Montana

Dayton is a community of 104 people in Lake County, set on the northwestern edge of Flathead Lake just north of the lake's Big Arm. It lies on the Flathead Indian Reservation, and U.S. Route 93 runs along its northern and western edges, reaching Kalispell 30 miles to the north and Polson, the county seat, 22 miles to the south.

The first Dayton stood 2 miles inland, on the road to Lake Mary Ronan. When the reservation opened to homesteading in 1910, some residents decided that a town on the lakeshore would bring in more trade, so Dayton moved down to the water. The post office followed them to the new site on the lake.

  • First Protestant churchThe Dayton Presbyterian Church was founded before any other Protestant church on the Flathead Indian Reservation, which made this lakeshore town the first home of a Protestant congregation there.
  • Old Dayton became ProctorAfter the post office moved to the lakeshore, the people left at the original inland townsite on the road to Lake Mary Ronan petitioned for a new name. Their old town of Dayton became Proctor, and the Dayton name stayed with the town by the lake.
  • Names in two Native languagesIn the Kalispel-Pend d'Oreille language the community is called iʔɫixʷ, and in the Ktunaxa language it is called aki¢qa.
