About Dearborn, Michigan
Dearborn is a city of 109,976 people in Wayne County, about 7 miles west of downtown Detroit, where three branches of the Rouge River join. French-Canadian voyageurs named the place La Belle Fontaine for its many springs. In English that name became Springwells. French colonists farmed here, and the settlement was linked to the ribbon farms along the Detroit River and to the Sauk Trail.
American settlers came in larger numbers after 1786. Dearborn Township was organized in 1833, and three years later, in 1836, Dearbornville became a village. Both were named for Henry Dearborn, a Revolutionary War general who served as Secretary of War under Thomas Jefferson. The Detroit Arsenal, built on the Chicago Road, helped the village grow, though the area stayed mostly farmland through the 1800s. It became the Town of Dearborn in 1893 and a city in 1927. A year later voters merged it with neighboring Fordson, the old Springwells, which feared that a growing Detroit would swallow it.
- Henry Ford's hometownHenry Ford was born on a farm that stood where Ford Road now meets Greenfield Road. He later built his Fair Lane estate here, with a dam on the Rouge River to run its powerhouse. He also built the River Rouge Complex, the biggest factory in his empire. Ford Motor Company still keeps its world headquarters in Dearborn.
- Collecting since 1906Ford began gathering Americana as early as 1906, and that collection now fills the Henry Ford Museum. With Greenfield Village beside it, The Henry Ford is the largest indoor-outdoor history museum complex in the United States. It is also Metro Detroit's leading tourist attraction.
- An island made in 1922Engineers dug a second channel for the River Rouge in 1922 so that big lake freighters could reach the factories upstream. The cut left behind Fordson Island, 8.4 acres of land about three miles above the Detroit River. It is privately owned and still belongs to the city.
- A library for Ford's centennialDearborn's first public library opened in 1924, in a building later named for Katharine Wright Bryant, who drew up the plans and led the push to get it built. Ford Motor Company offered the city $3 million around April 1963 for a new library honoring Henry Ford. On July 30, 1963, the 100th anniversary of his birth, the company deeded 15.3 acres for the project. Dedication of the Henry Ford Centennial Library came on November 25, 1969.
- The first Arab American museumLebanese Christians came to Dearborn early in the twentieth century to work in the auto plants. More Arab immigrants arrived late in the century, most of them Muslims. The Arab American National Museum opened here in 2005, the first museum anywhere given over to the story and culture of Arab Americans. In a 2023 survey, 55% of residents claimed Middle Eastern or North African ancestry, which made Dearborn the first Arab-majority city in the country.
