About Deering, Alaska

Deering is a city of 182 people in the Northwest Arctic Borough, on a sandy spit of the Seward Peninsula where the Inmachuk River meets Kotzebue Sound. Its Inupiaq name is Ipnatchiaq. The town began in 1901 as a supply station called Yutica, which sent goods to the gold mining camps inland, and it grew up near the old Malemiut village of Inmachukmiut.

A post office opened here that same year. The name Deering most likely came from the schooner Abbie M. Deering, which sailed these waters around 1900. Deering became a fourth-class city in 1970, and a second council, set up under the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934, also serves the town.

  • A schooner from LynnCaptain James D. Winchester wrote in 1900 that twenty men bought the Abbie M. Deering in the Klondike Gold Rush, hoping to reach Alaska's gold. The schooner did go north, and it sank in the Aleutian Islands in September 1903. Rudyard Kipling named the same ship in his 1897 novel Captains Courageous.
  • A reindeer herd of 1,400Deering lives on a mix of wage work and subsistence. The Karmun-Moto reindeer herd, 1,400 strong, gives work to some local hunters, three residents hold commercial fishing permits, and many families earn money from handicrafts. The village hopes to build a craft center where young people can learn Native crafts.
  • A school of 50The Deering School, run by the Northwest Arctic Borough School District, had 4 teachers and 50 students in 2017, every one of them Alaska Native. Most people in town are Iñupiat, and the city bans the sale and importation of alcohol.
