About Deerpark, New York

Deerpark is a town of 7,509 people in western Orange County, where the Delaware River marks the line with Pennsylvania. Dutch and Huguenot colonists arrived in the 17th century and gathered around a Dutch settlement called Waghackamack, which was later renamed Minisink. Both New York and New Jersey claimed this ground, and the quarrel over the boundary began around 1700 and lasted until 1773.

During the Revolution, the Mohawk leader Joseph Brant raided the area twice. His raid of July 20, 1779, did the most harm, wrecking much of the settlement and leading to the Battle of Minisink. In 1798 the town of Deerpark was carved from the southeastern part of Mamakating, and on May 11, 1853, Port Jervis broke away to become a village of its own.

  • The patent of 1697The town's roots go back to the Wagheckemeck Patent of October 14, 1697. Thomas Samuel Swartwout, an early settler, shared the grant with six other men: Anthony and Bernardus Swartwout, Jacques Caudebec, Pierre Guimard, David Jamison and Jan Tyse.
  • Named for McDaniel's DeerparkLocal people knew one tract of land, closed in by a fence made of brush, as "McDaniel's Deerpark." When the town was formed in 1798, it took its name from that fenced tract.
  • Huguenots in the Neversink ValleyThe hamlet of Huguenot, north of Port Jervis on US 209, is named for the Huguenot immigrants who settled there to escape religious persecution. The Neversink River runs through the town, and the highway follows its course.
  • New York's center of populationCuddebackville, about ten miles north of Port Jervis where US 209 meets NY 211, takes its name from Colonel William Cuddeback, the first owner of the site. The 2010 census placed the center of population of New York state in this hamlet.
  • Hawk's Nest above the DelawareAt 67.9 square miles, Deerpark is the second largest town by area in Orange County. Along New York State Route 97, the Hawk's Nest scenic overlook looks out over the Delaware River and the Pennsylvania shore.
