This restored linen postcard shows the Del Haven Hotel and Cottages, a roadside stop along U.S. Route 1 some 23 miles north of Baltimore near Bel Air, the county seat of Harford County, Maryland. In the era this card was made, U.S. 1 was one of the great north–south highways of the East Coast, carrying travelers between cities and dotting the roadside with hotels, cottages, and motor courts like this one.
From roughly the 1930s into the 1940s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, printed on textured card stock with soft, saturated color that gave everyday scenes a warm glow. This view comes from the Tichnor Brothers of Boston, one of the most prolific publishers of the period, and has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL.
