About Delmont, New Jersey
European settlers founded Delmont in 1770. For more than a century it went by Ewings Neck. The Ewing family was among the first to settle here. A neck is a strip of higher ground ringed by marsh and lowland. The name changed to Delmont in 1891.
Many of Delmont's residents were old fishermen. They took out fishing parties, caught oysters, and trapped muskrats. The farms around the village were small and marshy, with naturally fertile soil.
