About Denmark, South Carolina

Denmark is a city of 3,186 people in Bamberg County, about 6 miles west of Bamberg, the county seat. It began in the 1830s as Grahams Turnout, a stop that grew up around a railroad extension and turnout. The town later took a new name to honor B. A. Denmark, a railroad official.

Trains still serve the city today, since Amtrak's Floridian stops here once a day in each direction on its run between Miami and New York. Denmark also grew into a college town. Voorhees opened in 1897, and Denmark Technical College grew out of a trade school started in 1948.

  • Voorhees, founded in 1897Elizabeth Evelyn Wright founded Voorhees College in Denmark in 1897, and it became a predominantly black school that is now called Voorhees University. Part of its campus is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Voorhees College Historic District.
  • A youth NAACP chapterCleveland Sellers grew up in Denmark and remembered how much Voorhees shaped the community around him. As a young man he organized a Youth Chapter of the NAACP in town. He later studied at Howard University and became a member of its Nonviolent Action Group, then worked with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee and the Mississippi Freedom Project. He told that story in Denmark during an interview with John Dittmer on March 21, 2013.
  • Dog Wood Festival since 1985Denmark has held its Dog Wood Festival once a year since 1985, usually on a sunny day in April. The festival brings rides, games and food and drink stands, and the money it raises goes back to the community. For years it ran along Beech Ave to South Beech Ave, and in 2019 it moved to Cypress St.
