About Denton, Maryland
Denton is a town of 4,848 people on the Choptank River, and it is the county seat of Caroline County. The town was founded in 1781 and first went by Eden Town, in honor of Sir Robert Eden, who had served as the last royal governor of Maryland. Over the years people shortened Eden Town to Denton, and the town was incorporated in 1802.
The Choptank River carried the town's trade. Shipyards along its banks kept the small sailing ships and steamships that worked the river in repair, and most of their traffic flowed down to Cambridge, the larger town downstream.
- Steamboats from the 1840sA steamboat from Baltimore had reached Denton before 1850, and the steamship trade began in the 1840s. For the next several decades steamers carried passengers and freight between Denton, Cambridge and other towns on the Chesapeake, until the trade ended in the 1920s. A historic steamboat pier is still preserved in town.
- Caught at the river in 1858The Choptank ran deep enough to stand in the way of enslaved people fleeing north to freedom. In 1858 Hugh Hazlett, an abolitionist of Irish-American background, was caught near Denton along with several people who had escaped slavery, and they were held there. A plaque now remembers the event.
- The Museum of Rural LifeThe Museum of Rural Life in Denton tells the story of the farming heritage of the town and the countryside around it.
