About Dillon, South Carolina

Dillon is a city of 6,384 people in northeastern South Carolina's Pee Dee region, with the Little Pee Dee River running just east of town. It was established on December 22, 1888, and it took its name from James W. Dillon, a prosperous settler who pushed hard to get a railroad built through the area.

His campaign produced the Wilson Short Cut Railroad. That line was later folded into the Atlantic Coast Line, which tied the town directly to the rest of the nation's rail lines. In 1910 a new county was carved out of Marion County and given the same name. Dillon is its seat, and the Dillon County Courthouse joined the National Register in 1981. For decades, most local families made their living cutting timber or growing cotton and tobacco.

  • Named for James W. DillonJames W. Dillon was an Irishman who lived from 1826 to 1913. He settled here, prospered and led the drive to bring the railroad in. Both the city and the county carry his name, and his house in Dillon joined the National Register in 1971.
  • Wedding Capital of the EastSouth Carolina once let people as young as 14 marry with no other requirements, so many couples came to Dillon to wed, and the town became known as the Wedding Capital of the East. Many of them spent their honeymoons at South of the Border, 7 miles up U.S. 301 on the North Carolina line, where Alan Schafer had opened a small diner in 1950.
  • A passenger station from 1904The Atlantic Coast Line Railroad opened the Dillon station to passengers in 1904. Trains still stop there today, because Amtrak's Palmetto calls every day on its route from Savannah, Georgia, to New York City.
  • The Herald since 1894The Dillon Herald began publishing in 1894, not long after the town was founded. It is the oldest business in Dillon County that has operated without a break.
