Discover Tuskegees 1850s Architectural Gem
In the heart of Tuskegee, Alabama, a striking two-story masonry structure stands as a testament to mid-19th century architectural elegance. Built between 1854 and 1856 by William Varner, this residence features an impressive façade adorned with eight grand columns and a stately portico that invites admiration. The design showcases the refined taste of its owner, with French doors that open to a beautifully decorated interior, where a breakfast room and kitchen were later added.
Frances Benjamin Johnston, a pioneering photographer known for her work documenting Southern architecture, captured this historic home, contributing to the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South. Her image not only illustrates the architectural details—such as the cupolas that grace the roof—but also encapsulates the cultural heritage of Tuskegee, a town rich in history.
KNOWOL historical prints connect the rich stories and imagery of our past. A statement in any room, each reproduction is printed on museum-quality paper using a restored vintage image.
