This vintage linen postcard captures Dixie Diners, a roadside eatery that once welcomed travelers along U.S. Route 40 at 6425 Pulaski Highway in Baltimore, Maryland. Before the interstate era, U.S. Route 40 was one of the nation's great eastβwest arteries, tracing in part the historic National Road, and the diners and motels strung along it formed the backbone of American car travel.
From the 1930s through the 1940s, "linen" postcards reached their golden age, their textured paper and saturated colors turning everyday Main Streets and roadside stops into vivid keepsakes. This card was originally published by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work is preserved today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL.
