About Douglassville, Pennsylvania

After some early Swedish settlers moved away, carpenter Jacob Warren bought land here and built several houses. The place became known as Warrensburg. Warren failed in business, and his property passed to others. George Douglass then became a large landowner along the river. The hamlet took the name Douglassville, and its post office opened in March 1829.

Members of the Church of England had settled in Amity Township, now Douglassville, before 1740. They had a church built there. At that time the only other Episcopal settlement in the county was in Caernarvon Township, near Morgantown.

  • Early Swedish settlersLate in the 1600s a group of Swedes crossed the Atlantic and settled near Philadelphia. Three of them, brothers named Yocum, made their home on the eastern bank of the Schuylkill River near Douglassville. Their lands were surveyed in 1701. The brothers received patents for them between 1704 and 1705.
