This restored linen postcard captures Duck Island in the Potomac River, just above Williamsport, on the stretch of water between Hagerstown, Maryland and Martinsburg, West Virginia. The Potomac forms the long border between Maryland and West Virginia here, and Williamsport sits along the historic Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, which once carried boats and cargo for miles beside the river.
From roughly the 1930s through the 1940s, American "linen" postcards reached their golden age, prized for their textured finish and saturated, hand-tinted colors. This card was published by Tichnor Bros. Inc. of Boston, whose work is preserved today in the celebrated Tichnor Brothers Collection. This edition has been carefully restored and color-revived by KNOWOL.
