About Dundee, Mississippi

The village was founded in 1884. It grew up once a new rail line, the Louisville, New Orleans and Texas Railway, arrived. Its first name was Carnesville, honoring Captain J.B. Carnes, a major county landowner. When the post office opened in 1887, another Carnesville already existed. So the town picked the name Dundee from a list.

Dundee was a transportation hub, and its railroad depot went up around 1895. The blues musician W. C. Handy played there once, on the wooden platform, while crowds danced. In 2011 the old depot, the last one in Tunica County, was moved to Robinsonville. There it was restored as a visitors center.
