About Dunn, North Carolina

Dunn is a city of 8,446 people and the largest in Harnett County. It began as a quiet hamlet called Lucknow, much smaller than Averasborough, a bigger town on the Cape Fear River. After the 1865 Battle of Averasborough, most of that town's people moved to Lucknow, and the hamlet they settled in grew into Dunn.

  • Renamed in 1873In 1873 Lucknow took the name Dunn, after Bennett Dunn. He was in charge of building the rail line that ran between Wilson and Fayetteville.
  • A city since 1887Dunn became an incorporated city on February 12, 1887. At the time it was a logging town, and it was also a center for distilling turpentine.
  • A paddling case in courtIn December 1981, assistant principal Glenn Varney paddled three Dunn High School students for skipping school. The parents of one of them, 17-year-old Shelly Gaspersohn, sued him and the school for $55,000. When the case went to trial in December 1983, the jury needed only 15 minutes to side with the defendants. Her family appealed, but the Supreme Court of North Carolina later turned the appeal down.
  • Before the U.S. SenateShelly Gaspersohn carried her paddling case beyond the courtroom. On October 17, 1984, she told her story to a U.S. Senate subcommittee. Paddling stayed legal in local schools for years after that, until Harnett County banned it in 2008.
