About Durham, Oklahoma
Durham is a rural community of 21 people in Roger Mills County, set along State Highway 30. The Texas line is four miles to the west, and the Antelope Hills and the Canadian River lie four miles to the north. In autumn 1893 the Corson family claimed a 640-acre homestead where Turkey Creek flows into the Washita River, close to where Durham stands today.
- Named for its first postmasterDurham got its post office on May 15, 1902. The office, and the community that grew up around it, took the name of the first postmaster, Doris Durham Morris.
- A Western artist's lifelong homeAugusta Metcalfe came to the Corson homestead as a girl in 1893 and spent the rest of her eighty-nine years on those 640 acres, where she became a Western artist. She entered the Oklahoma Hall of Fame in 1968. Beyond that, the National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame recognized her too. She died on May 9, 1971.
- Break O' Day FarmThe Corson-Metcalfe homestead today operates as the Break O' Day Farm & Metcalfe Museum. Visitors can see Augusta Metcalfe's paintings next to work by present-day regional artists, and the farm itself shows how one family lived in Oklahoma Territory and the years after.
