About East Bloomfield, New York

East Bloomfield is a town of 3,661 people in western Ontario County, south of Rochester. The land was once Iroquois territory, and it later passed to settlers as part of the Phelps and Gorham Purchase. In 1789, the same year Ontario County was formed, the town was set up under the name Bloomfield.

The first town covered much more ground than it does now. In 1812 parts of it were split off to become Victor and Mendon, and Mendon ended up in Monroe County. When West Bloomfield was made a separate town in 1833, the original town took the name East Bloomfield to tell the two apart.

  • Ganondagan, destroyed in 1687The Seneca village of Ganondagan stood inside the original Town of Bloomfield. In 1687 the Marquis de Denonville led a campaign against the Seneca and destroyed the village. The ground is now the Ganondagan State Historic Site, which belongs to the town of Victor after the 1812 split.
  • Birthplace of the Northern SpyThe Northern Spy apple traces its home to East Bloomfield, so one of the apples grown across New York State began in this town.
  • Two villages merged in 1990For years the town center held two villages side by side, Holcomb and East Bloomfield. In 1990 they joined to form the present village of Bloomfield, which sits in the north part of the town and serves as its center.
