About East Cambridge, Massachusetts

East Cambridge grew as a freight hub. Canal boats hauled goods to Lowell starting around 1802. Railroads followed in 1835, 1843 and 1847, and freight tracks once ran down neighborhood streets. In the late 1800s the Meigs Elevated Railway, a steam monorail, ran here as a demonstration.

Much of East Cambridge stands on landfill. By the 1920s filling had stretched the street grid close to its present shape. The Miller's River was filled in too, except for a small piece beneath the Charlestown highway interchange.
