About East Columbia, Texas

East Columbia is a community of 128 people in Brazoria County, on the Brazos River west of Angleton. Josiah Hughes Bell founded it in 1823, and it grew into one of the busiest inland ports in Texas, serving the plantations that spread along the Brazos in the 19th century.

Bell later started a second settlement out on the prairie. By 1842 that settlement was known as West Columbia, and the river town had been renamed East Columbia. It sat close to the head of navigation on the river, so it grew quickly once the capital of Texas moved to Houston, and by the mid-1800s it had 800 people.

  • First named MarionJosiah Hughes Bell, a native of South Carolina, came to Texas in 1821 with Stephen F. Austin's Old 300 colony. On the Brazos just below Varner's Creek he built a landing of log docks, laid out a town beside it and named it Marion. In 1827 he sold the townsite to Walter C. White.
  • A railroad from Houston in 1859The Houston Tap and Brazoria Railroad reached East Columbia from Houston in 1859. The Civil War soon sent the town into decline, and as rail lines spread through the area, the steamboat traffic that had built the port fell away.
  • Three storms and an oil strikeStorms struck the community in 1900, 1909 and 1913 and did heavy damage. Then oil was discovered in West Columbia in 1918, and East Columbia's merchants left for their neighbor. By the 1970s the post office had closed and far fewer people lived here.
