About East Dubuque, Illinois

From the Illinois A Descriptive and Historical Guide: "Leaving the upland at 88 m., the highway begins its long descent to the Mississippi bottoms, across which it winds its way along the base of the bluffs to EAST DUBUQUE, 92.5 m. (615 alt., 1,395 pop.), a bustling ferry landing before the construction of the highway bridge in 1887."

From the City of East Dubuque: "Originally named Dunleith after a Scottish village, the little river settlement quickly prospered. The name was changed to East Dubuque in 1877 and the railroad soon brought land speculators, hotelkeepers and ferry operators."
