About East Norwich, New York

East Norwich is a hamlet of 2,792 people in the Town of Oyster Bay, a Nassau County community on Long Island's North Shore. John Townsend held land here around 1680, and his sons, James and George Townsend, called the place Norwich in honor of the English city where their father was born.

The hamlet kept that plain name for many years, until mail service brought a change. A weekly newspaper followed in 1880, started by neighbors who pooled their money to buy a press.

  • East added for the mailFor years the place was simply Norwich. The postal service asked for a new name to end confusion with the other Norwich in New York, in Chenango County, so residents put East ahead of the old name. The hamlet has carried the longer name ever since.
  • A weekly paper in 1880In September 1880, a few men living in East Norwich raised about $1,000 to buy a hand press. With it they launched the East Norwich Enterprise, a weekly newspaper, and Halsted H. Frost took charge as its manager.
  • Ground shaped by glaciersEast Norwich sits on the Harbor Hill Moraine, the rolling ground that glaciers piled up during the Wisconsin Glacial Episode. The moraine takes its name from Harbor Hill in Roslyn, the highest point in Nassau County.
