About Eastport, Maine

Eastport took its name because it was the easternmost port in the country. During the War of 1812, a British fleet under Sir Thomas Hardy captured Fort Sullivan in July 1814. Britain held the island town until 1818, when it returned to American control. No place in the lower 48 states has been occupied by a foreign country more recently.

The first sardine factory in Eastport opened about 1875. By 1886 the town had 13 sardine factories that ran day and night in season, with about 800 men, women and children at work. The fishing trade later declined, and the city went bankrupt in 1937.

  • A natural wonder offshoreThe Western Hemisphere's largest tidal whirlpool, called Old Sow, lies on the border Eastport shares with Deer Island, New Brunswick.
