About Eckhart Mines, Maryland

Eckhart Mines was founded as a coal company town. The Maryland Mining Heritage Guide calls it the first one in the state. The first bituminous coal mine in the Georges Creek coalfield was developed here. The site was chosen because the National Road crossed the coal outcrop here. The original owner was George Eckhardt, a German immigrant.

By 1940, high-grade bituminous coal had been mined at Eckhart Mines for more than a century. Coal was first dug in the area around 1804. Large-scale mining did not begin until the 1830s.
