About Edgar, Wisconsin

Edgar is a village of 1,439 people in Marathon County, part of the Wausau metropolitan area. The Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western Railway platted the village in 1891. It took the name of William Edgar, a man with an interest in the surrounding land who also owned a sawmill near Wausau. By the time of the 1913 county history, Edgar was one of the county's stops on the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad, along with Marathon City, Kenwood and Stratford.

  • From logger to bottlerCharles Tess first came to Marathon County in 1904 to work as a logger. After two winters cutting timber in the woods, he moved to Edgar and bought the Edgar Bottling Works from Peter Pestien.
  • A library since 1928In 1928 the Edgar Women's Club began borrowing books from the Wisconsin Traveling Library, and that collection served the village as its library until 1946. Preschool storytimes began in 1948. When the Wausau Public Library and the Marathon County Library merged in 1973, Edgar's library became a branch of the new Marathon County Public Library. In 1994 a countywide building program paid to remodel the old Edgar Bank, which gave the library more books, computers and room for family programs.
  • Tree City USA since 1995Edgar has held its standing as a Tree City USA every year since 1995.
