About Edinburg, Missouri

Edinburg was first called Bucksnort. Mr. Harvey, a noted hunter, once started a deer on the spot that is now Main Street. The deer went through the place snorting. Later, people decided the name was not nice. They wanted Harveyville, but Harvey would not have it. An old Scotchman named McFarland chose Edinburg, after his home city in Scotland.

Edinburg was the boyhood home of Enoch Herbert Crowder, who attended classes at Grand River College here. As judge advocate general of the Army, he drew up the Selective Service Act, adopted May 18, 1917. In 1923 he became the first United States ambassador to Cuba.

  • The college that made the townEdinburg was the second oldest town in the county. Isaac J. Harvey built a store here in 1838. Grand River College, organized in 1850, made it an important place. The town declined after the college moved away and the railroad passed to the north.
