About Eleele, Hawaii

Eleele is a community of 2,515 people on the south side of Kauai, in Kauai County, up from 2,040 in 2000. Its Hawaiian name means black, or black water, and the Hanapepe River marks its border with neighboring Hanapepe. The town also takes in the east side of Hanapepe Bay.

Sugar shaped the place. The Eleele Plantation and its mill got their start in 1884. In 1899 that plantation was joined with other lands to create the McBryde Sugar Company, and Eleele became the company's home.

  • Port Allen since 1909The landing that shipped for the Eleele Plantation and its mill first went by the Eleele name. In 1909 it took the name Port Allen, which it still carries.
  • A post office in 1899The year the McBryde Sugar Company was organized, Eleele got a post office of its own. It was set up inside the McBryde plantation office.
  • Glass BeachGlass Beach, a shore covered in sea glass rather than sand, is one of Eleele's best known spots and a favorite stop for visitors.
