About the Village of Elk Mound, Wisconsin

Elk Mound is a village of 985 people in Dunn County, in the Chippewa Valley between Eau Claire, Menomonie and Chippewa Falls. Its first settlers arrived in 1870, while crews were building the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis and Omaha railway through the area, and a post office called Elk Mound opened that same year.

The village took its name from Elk Mound, the hill that rises nearby. Surveyors measured and platted the settlement in May 1874, and farming remained the main way of making a living in the district for generations, until housing developments and small businesses began to grow in recent years.

  • The road and the castleEarl Hansen and Leon Cartwright owned farms on the north side of the hill, and sometime after 1924 they cut the first dirt road to its top. Today the summit is Mound Hill Park, and the park and its "castle" honor the rural letter carriers of Dunn County who have died. It is believed to be the only monument of its kind in America.
  • The 2019 tornadoIn September 2019 an EF3 tornado tore through the Elk Mound area and nearby towns, damaging much of the community. Families lost houses, but no one was killed. A much weaker EF0 tornado struck the area the following year.
  • Where Menards rebates goMenards customers mail their rebate coupons to Elk Mound, and that address is what the village is best known for far beyond Dunn County.
